You<\/em> may rejoice, I must mourn.&#8221; And he asked them, &#8220;Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day?&#8221; It wasn&#8217;t until 2009 the senate passed a resolution apologizing for slavery! &#8211; for the &#8220;fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery_in_the_United_States#The_end_of_slavery\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery_in_the_United_States#The_end_of_slavery<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I live a history of injustice; I live it in my bones and in my heart.\u00a0 I often wonder why it haunts me; but I know.\u00a0 Injustice upon my great-grandparents, my grandparents, and my mother gave cause to secrets, and lies and children not even knowing their family names-my grandfather had to change his name, the name of his white father, in order to escape the south searching for freedom.\u00a0 And, who was his Negro mother?\u00a0 I will never know.<\/p>\n<p>The construct of race has always been a problem for me.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Sometimes I just don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Other times I\u2019m very clear about why.\u00a0 It has affected my siblings differently, but I believe we all hold the secrets and lies in our bodies.\u00a0 My uncle said once he was so tired of having stomach upsets, he eventually just passed for white.<\/p>\n<p>I want love.\u00a0 I imagine love.\u00a0 But the construct of race has almost always been a problem in my relationships.\u00a0 Some refuse to see it.\u00a0 Some are too na\u00efve.\u00a0 Some just lazy.\u00a0 Some figure it has nothing to do with them.\u00a0 I refuse to hide.\u00a0 I refuse to forget my history.<\/p>\n<p>But, I also refuse to give up on love.\u00a0 Without love there is nothing.\u00a0 Without love there will never be world peace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sherry Quan Lee<\/p>\n<p>July 4, 2012<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOVE IMAGINED:\u00a0 Declaration of Independence Frederick Douglass said, \u201cThis Fourth of July is yours, not mine.
